Exploring the Alcudia Old Town of Alcudia

Many tourists come to stay in the resort of Port de Alcudia and they never visit the jewel of the area: the old town of Alcudia, a place that it is a must in the north of Mallorca. Let us share with you some information if you want to explore the Alcudia old town area.

Alcudia and Port de Alcudia, what is the difference?

A little history…

Many times our clients ask us if Port de Alcudia and Alcudia aren’t the same, and why we have a Port Alcudia and Alcudia.

The reason dates back to the 16th century when the pirates were frequent in the Mediterranean area. They were coming from the north area of Africa and they were sacking the villages close to the coast taking with them money, food and people who were sold as slaves in Africa.

This forced the inhabitants of the area to live inland where it was easier to be protected and to defend themselves agains a pirate attack. The fishermen had their boats close to the coast, and many times had a small house there where to keep the boat, but they were living in the inland village. So, for instance, the fisherman might work in Port of Alcudia but live within the safety of the walled town of Alcudia, away from the coast.

The arrival of tourism…

Then during the sixties the tourism started and the hotels and the touristic infrastructure was built close to the coast, at the Port, because of course, the holiday-makers were demanding beach resorts, not inland villages.

So now in many touristic places we find the Port which is the tourist area, and the old town where the village is, just like in Alcudia.
